·         What is your overall evaluation of this article?

_____Poor          ______Fair            ______Good        ___X____Very Good       _____Excellent

·         Why did you choose to review this particular article?

This article was assigned by our professor for our first journal entry assignment.

·         How would you rate this article as a tool for teaching a student about cardiopulmonary physiology, radiography, or another allied health specialty?

Students:               ____Poor       ____Fair       __X___Good     _____Very Good      _____Excellent

Teachers:               ____Poor       ____Fair       _____Good     __X___Very Good      _____Excellent

Patients:                 ____Poor       ____Fair       _____Good     __X___Very Good      _____Excellent

·         Comment on the readability of this article.

This article was very informative however I had a hard time understanding it at times. Especially during the description of drugs and the diseases, I think it would be hard for the general public to understand as well. Its got a lot of jargon that only doctors or those experienced in the health field might understand compared to the rest of us. This article did expose me to this rising concern on this topic that I was not aware of and I am grateful in my knowledge of this now.

·         Course Topics covered:

This article covers depression of youth and adolescents. It also explains the history and reasons depression is often missed in young patients. It discusses the treatment involved and the types of depression and causes often experienced by young people. As well as referrals for patients that might be going through depression.

·         Brief Summary:

This article discusses youth and adolescent depression. Experts thought 40 years ago depression couldn’t exist in this age group because it was believed that they didn’t have the psychological and cognitive ability. However studies and patients have proven that depression can exist in these individuals. This article shows staticts, treatments, and conditions that go with depression.

·         Identify and attempt to explain three (3) terms, procedures or concepts that were unfamiliar to you when reviewing this article.

Dysthymic disorder: Is a chronic condition in which depressive symptoms occur for most of the time “just about every day” for at least two years.

Comorbidity: Is the presence of more than one disease or health issue in a individual at any given time. Examples include anxiety disorders, disruptive disorders, and “double depressions.

Tricyclic  antidepressants: This is similar compounds developed around the 1950’s which later proved to help with antidepressant activity in humans. Examples of such medicine include imipramine, desipramine, amitriptyline, Elavil, and Desyrel.

The medicine recommended for the different types I was also inexperienced in however I am not as worried on that aspect as I am what the article is trying to express.

·         Detail the strengths/weaknesses of this article.

The strengths of this article are its details. It discusses research and studies as well as data on and about the depression of youth. It also is a lot easier to read than I first thought it would when I first looked at it. The writing style is really informative as well.

The weaknesses I believe include the difficulty of the article to read by those who have little knowledge of medical terms. The graphs also were a bit technical in their discussion of the topic. It was sometimes hard to understand. As well as the lacking of the depression checklist and the difficulty of the tables. I understand that it wasn’t allowed to be copied though.

·         How might this article be useful to you in your further studies and career?

This article brought to my attention the growing issue of depression among the youth of today. This problem will just continue to grow and it is important to see and understand as much about these issues before entering the medical field.

·         Does the article include a list of references/citations that can be used to find more information on the topics they cover?

Yes. The article used at least 30 references.
