Many students never realize there's a world beyond the textbooks and so it's all new to them. You learn that in your specialty there are things printed every day that are new. You will have to keep up to maintain your professional competency.
Journals are a resource that you can use, both here in school and when you get out in a professional situation. The assignment is carefully sequenced with clear due dates and instructions.
I believe
that all of you, as future health care professionals, should be aware of how you can keep up on new developments in allied
health and the issues that surround them. Therefore, the objectives of this assignment
are to familiarize you with the available literature in medicine and allied health.
To meet the objectives of the assignment, you will:

Read and study, in detail, one
current article on a topic covered in class from any of the three journals mentioned above.
·
You will submit two assigned journal articles as Discussion Forums, and
you may submit 2 or more of your own for credit in ALHE4060. Ask the instructor
if you wish to submit more than 2.
Details of What You Need To Do:
1. Go to the library and check out
the issues of the journal. You can also use the Internet for a resource.
2. TIP: Most Journals publish a subject
index in their December issue. This is extremely useful and convenient when performing
searches on subjects.
3. Look through the selected article
ass well as the rest of that issue of the journal and several other recent issues to get a clear understanding of:

5. what audience it is intended to

6. Whether references for further information
are given.
7. Complete the Journal Article

This article is straight to the point and is detailed in the symptoms that adults and children have or could have if
they have sleep apnea.
The topic covered in this article is sleep apnea’s symptoms.
This article covers many symptoms that adults and children face that have sleep apnea.
- Identify and attempt to explain three (3) terms, procedures or concepts
that were unfamiliar to you when reviewing this article.
Cor Pulmonale – although rare sleep apnea can cause this condition in
children which causes their right side of their heart to increase in size.
Restless leg syndrome- I had heard of this condition, but never really knew
what it was and I figured I would look it up considering it is something often associated with sleep apnea. It is however
the need to move the legs or uncomfortable feelings in the calves, feet, or other muscles in the legs. This syndrome occurs
often at night, but can happen anytime.
Excessive Daytime Sleepiness- This sparked my interested the article said it
was, “falling asleep when you normally should not, such as while you are eating, talking, or driving.” I know
people that are sleep during the day. However I am curious if this daytime sleepiness if it is the typical normal sleepiness
or is different than that and contains the strong desire to sleep during the day. Also is this excessive only caused by sleep
apnea or can medications cause this. All in all I didn’t know there was such thing as an excessive daytime sleepiness.
- Detail the strengths/weaknesses of this article.
Strengths include this articles ease of read ability. It is also straight to the point and doesn’t bog down the
reader with details and unnecessary information. It is just plain and simple, nice and easy.
Weaknesses include the article’s shortness. It is not very in-depth it does accomplish it goal of reporting the
symptoms it just seems short. Also it isn’t that technical which can be a good or bad point depending on the reader’s
interpretation.
- How might this article be useful to you in your further studies and
career?
Since many people have this condition and don’t know it. One might be able to notice it in patients in their
work or career if patients complain or mentions some of the symptoms related in this article.
- Does the article include a list of references/citations that can
be used to find more information on the topics they cover?
On the website there are other links to similar topics, articles and discussion. However the article itself doesn’t
mention any.

While it uses some doctoral lingo, patients have the symptoms would be able to understand and relate
with the article. Other readers might have to look up certain words or phrases.

This article covers what Sleep Apnea is, its background, risk factors, symptoms of
Obstructive Sleep Apnea, and other aspects of this condition.
· Brief Summary:
This article describes it all. It goes into great detail about this condition and
lists its main causes as well as possible causes and the risk factors involved with different races and sexes. The article
also lists other diseases often follow or stem from sleep apnea.

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) - is a common surgical procedure to help eliminate Obstructive Sleep Apnea in adults. It involves the removal
of tonsils, uvula, and the distal margin of the soft palate, along with some reshaping of the soft tissue. It has a success
rate of around fifty percent.
Polysomnography (PSG) -
This is basically a sleep study used to measure the quality of sleep and airflow that the patient exerts through their nose
or mouth and typical takes at least 6 hours.
Pickwickian
syndrome: This is obesity hypoventilation syndrome named after a character in a Charles Dickens novel. This disease is commonly
confused with Sleep Apnea. Obesity hypoventilation syndrome involves a patient that is overly obese and has episodes of unstoppable
sleep during the day, but restless nights.

This article is very in-depth and that’s strength. It reports on many details
often left out in other articles.
Its weakness includes its length discussion and possible difficulty of words in someone
is unknowing of the topic and aspects of the disease.
· How might this article be useful to you in your further studies and career?
It’s always import to learn new things. Our techniques and views of treating
diseases and learning about them is ever changing. It is important if one is in the health care field to always continue to
learn. By learning about this common condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnea I would know about its common signs and risk
factors involved that commonly follow it in patients.
